Was trying out my new ring flash with this macro shot. Notice how the shadow is all around the mint in the center. That's an indication that a ring flash was used. d70, 300mm, f/11, 1/250sec
Was sick at home (darn cold). But left the house to get coffee around the corner at Alvin's Coffee, the best coffee in San Francisco. I swear! d70, 50mm, iso200, f/4, 1/3000sec
Another attempt at the Atlas photo. Not quite there, yet. This photo was followed by a 7 mile hike through the pouring rain. Another Atlas photo: #1. d70, 18mm, iso400, f/3.5, 1/350sec
Today was a good day for street photography. Took some time out of my day to do what I like best. Here are the other results: #1, #2, #3, #4, #5, #6, and #7. d70, 70mm, iso200, f/8, 1/90sec
Edward Weston, while in Mexico with Tina Modotti, was fascinated with his toilet bowl and took a series of photos of it. Unlike Marcel Duchamp he did not want to shook, but show the beauty of such a simple object. I was inspired to make my own toilet look good. d70, 18mm, iso200, f/6.7, 1/180sec
For my final project in one of my classes I want to use the metapher of Atlas holding the sky. This is a first test shot, there will be more to come. d70, 18mm, iso200, f/3.5, 1/90sec
I recently started commuting via public transportation to and from work. Today I wanted to take some photos on the Muni (SF public transportation) doing hip shots. The interesting thing about hip shots is that you never 100% know what you will get. But I really like this one. d70, 50mm, iso200, f/1.8, 1/15sec
Was experiementing some more after I realized I had not taken a shot of the day. Doesn't this look like bug eyes? Can you figure out what it is? d70, 50mm, iso200, f/1.8, 1/500sec
I used to do Kendo for five years in college. For my portraiture class I decided to dig out my old equipment and shot some related photos. This one shows part of the meditation that is being done before and after every practice. This shot shows me in all my gear: #1. d70, 35mm, iso200, f/19, 1/250sec, softbox
I was experiementing with b/w with red filter. Red filters apparently smoothen the skin for b/w images, so I had to try it. d70, 52mm, iso200, f/8, 1/250sec, red filter
Even though this was more of a candid shot, I can't help but be intrigued by it: The left eye is aligned almost dead center of the image, but because of the intensity and the focus on the right eye you barely pay attention to it. And the right eye balances all of the white area on the right. d70, 55mm, iso200, f/4.5, 1/30sec
I liked how the light fell through the entrance of the MoMA. I also got to play with a ring flash and got this eye image: #1 and another street shot: #2. d70, 50mm, iso200, f/19, 1/125sec
Was walking around the city a little and got a few of nice shots. This one was taken on California and Kearny. Other shots: #1 and #2. d70, 50mm, iso200, f/8, 1/250sec
Part of a fun assignment in color theory around using a TV. Also have a decent street photo around twilight: #1 and another TV shot: #2. d70, 44mm, iso400, f/5.6, 1/4sec
This is not my photo... I wish it was! This is a photo, "The hands of the marionette player", was taken by Tina Modotti, who learnt photography from Edward Weston in Mexico. It was taken exactly 80 years ago and is currently exhibited at the SFMoMA. I always find it amazing how a photo taken with simple technology almost a centaury ago is deeper and more thought provoking than the bulk of the images I see today. It makes me think all that digital technology distracts more than it helps. I also have my own (inferior) image from today: #1.
Was up early to take (film) photos for my final project and while taking a break and kicking back with a cup o' joe, this image came along. d70, 70mm, iso200, f/4.5, 1/90sec
Was out at night taking night shots with film and digital camera. This is a long exposure of the violent Pacific Ocean taken at Sutro Bath. It looks so calm. I have another successful digital image (before my battery died) and a street photo from earlier in the day: #1 and #2. d70, 27mm, iso200, f/8, 4.5min
Brrrr. It's been a rainy day. Here's the first photo of this years rain season. More photos from today: #1, #2, and #3. d70, 50mm, iso200, f/8, 1/90sec
Part of assignment for portraiture class. These three images were taken at different locations, but in a way so that they create a story together. Here are the individual shots: #1, #2, and #3. A second triple is here: all, #1, #2, and #3. d70, two external strobes w/ gels.
